While we watched the dreadful pictures of the Katrina victims in various areas of the gulf, particularly the sad and often infuriating pictures of those stranded in New Orleans, it never occurred to me that there would be anything good we might see come out of this. Almost a complete city destroyed, countless lives lost, and other lives changed forever. And as I received word that we had family members involved in the nightmare, that belief seemed to be strengthened. But there was clearly a lovely light at the end of this dark tunnel.
The outpouring of help that originated from this example was something which one must experience at least one time in a lifetime to renew one’s faith in humanity. Family, friends, friends of friends, even strangers, rushed to the rescue of not merely our kids, but members of countless other families in the face of this tragedy. Our gratefulness should not be measured and the gifts of affection will always be treasured.
But there is one act of kindness that was definitely surprising…and welcomed! There was 17 family members who had lost virtually everything. Of that number, five members were stranded in Mississippi with no means of transportation. That they had fled their properties with almost simply the garments on their backs. We were required to get them to San Diego County to my sister DiAnna’s home where they can make an effort to pull their lives together. We simply had to discover a way.
Money was pooled together, because of the kind assistance of many generous people. We considered the bus, but that wouldn’t work. These were not running. Then, my hardworking sister discovered another route: Delta Air Lines. She discovered Delta was discounting their flights for Katrina victims hoping to get for the safety with their families.
